How many people can honestly say they’ve sat down and really messed with the internet on the Wii? Almost everyone has a computer available to them so why would you use the Wii? Here’s one reason. Only one computer available in the household.
It started when we lost a laptop due to the motherboard frying. So it’s the one semi-decent laptop that works when it wants to and the Wii.
Well, the Wii isn’t so bad actually. Sure, it might take a little while to actually load and typing might be a hassle. But guess what. You can plug in a usb keyboard and it works perfectly. It even functions with Animal Crossing City Folk. I don’t have any other games that use typing so I can’t test any further, but from what I’ve been messing with the past 12 hours, this isn’t so bad.
Youtube loads for videos, news sites such as Digg work perfectly, and even social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook work as well. Facebook is a bit slower to work and somewhat glitchy as there is a lot to load on the page, but it’s managable. The chat function does not appear to work as there is no way to click to send a message so you’ll have to write back and forth on the wall and actual messages. Small price to pay to actually keep up with your daily internet social life.
Twitter and Formspring.me work as normal with minimal loading time from Twitter. You can even check your mail from various email clients such as Hotmail and Yahoo. Certain sites such as DeviantArt and GameSpot will show you the mobile version of their site, but that can easily be disabled by looking for the link that says “Disable mobile site” or “View regular site”. Everything will appear as normal and once again it’s just clicking around to what you’re looking for.
When in a pinch for some internet time, the Wii works well. Never thought I’d actually use it for much, but hey, there’s a first time for everything.
